Job Description
In this position you will be a fully qualified contributor with thorough knowledge and understanding of design for circularity and circular materials as related to sustainability. GM has a corporate goal of utilizing 50% sustainably sourced materials in vehicles by 2030. You will possess broad technical knowledge, training and understanding of circular concepts associated with environmental, social and governance sustainability combined with creative and independent thinking and conceptual ability to accomplish corporate goals. We are currently looking for talented individuals who have a passion for the environment and who want to assist in making GM a leader in environmental, social and governance sustainability.
As a Circularity Engineer, you will be part of a team fulfilling GM’s vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. As a valued member in the Sustainable Workplaces team, you’re your role will focus on providing technical expertise, developing strategies, and determining the future success of GM. Ultimately, you will champion our Sustainable Workplaces (SW) vision in “creating places where you want to be”. Promote GM’s values and make customer-focused decisions.

Job Description:
Circularity engineers provide engineering support to the Global Sustainability effort within Design, Materials Engineering, Product Engineering, and associated teams
- Support and lead design for disassembly development
- Provide reuse and recycling recommendations
- Interact regularly with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, materials engineers, CAE engineers, suppliers, purchasing and other Sustainable Workplaces personnel to achieve circular processes and sustainability targets.
- Understand material validation, specifications, and performance requirements
- Support evaluation and approval of sustainable materials suppliers
- Understand new materials technology and processes
- Understand waste streams and possess reprocess expertise
- Understand calculation of greenhouse gases
- Support resolving environmental issues
- Support resolving materials-related Issues
- Support corporate biodiversity goals
- Understand wildlife habitat site certification process
- Support sites with wildlife habitat site certification
- Troubleshoot complex problems often with incomplete information to arrive at a root cause
- Interface and participate with Ellen MacArthur Foundation
- Travel as required, including international
Abilities:

Required Skills and Experience:
- Experience with circular economy principles and practices
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a release engineer, materials engineer or chemist or related engineering
- Familiarity of the vehicle design process is preferred.
- Familiarity of the automotive manufacturing process is preferred.
- Understanding of the recycling industry including both chemical and mechanical recycling.
- Basic knowledge of the automotive recycling process is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of packaging and shipping processes
- Thorough knowledge of industry recognized material standards - GM, SAE, ASTM, ISO, etc.
- Familiarity with lifecycle analysis (LCA) software and usage
- Strong analytical skills - for data analysis, design of experiments, and problem-solving
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of basic office computer software
- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
- Able to manage several projects at the same time and prioritize as necessary
Education and Training:
- BS Degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Materials Science, Chemistry, or other related engineering degree
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Familiarity with the recycle industry and sustainable materials including biomaterials
- 5 years experience
- Manufacturing or industry experience
- Materials laboratory experience
- Advanced engineering or science degree(s)
- Completion of Design for Six Sigma certification
- Membership in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation
