About Our Workplace: Values, Culture and Work-Life Benefits

Values

At BSR, we strive to live our values in the way we work and interact with all our stakeholders everyday. BSR's Board and staff have endorsed leadership, integrity and respect for others as our core values.

Everyone is empowered to raise questions whenever they believe we’re off track, and each of us will acknowledge our mistakes, seek to learn from them and help us make continuous progress in creating the workplace culture at BSR we all want to establish. As a staff we will try to provide one another feedback on a daily basis and reflect on our progress as a staff group at least twice a year.

Leadership

Leadership is about identifying a new way to conduct ourselves, and our business. This includes our ability to challenge the traditional things we have been doing and find new ways to work that are innovative, better, more efficient and/or more effective. Leaders take risks, inspire others and help create a workplace culture that honors our values, achieves our mission, serves our customers and one another and enables everyone to contribute, develop professionally, be productive and look forward to being at work.

Integrity

Integrity is about always acting in ways that are consistent with high ethical standards both personally and professionally. People with integrity "walk their talk." They are honest, keep their promises and demonstrate their commitment to ethical values in all they say and do.

Respect

Respect is about treating all people with dignity and in ways that recognize their intrinsic value. It also means accepting a responsibility for the wise stewardship of our natural resources. Being respectful of others means breaking down the barriers between "we" and "they." It involves honoring differences and learning from the backgrounds, experience and thinking of others. Being respectful of natural resources means engaging in our work in ways that advance the goal of sustainability.

Culture

At BSR, Organizational Excellence is in the service of our mission, and is our collective and individual responsibility. Change is part of the deal -- this is a fast paced, entrepreneurial culture where highly talented and passionate people thrive. BSR is not a rules-based environment where we attempt to codify all activities. We rely on mutual trust and good judgment, as well as clear operational guidelines and systems, to achieve Organizational Excellence.

To work towards accountability, clarity, alignment and sustained performance, both BSR and our employees agree to a Deal:

BSR, the organization:

  • Provides competitive compensation and rewards results;
  • Defines job requirements and provides development opportunities;
  • Provides appropriate authority for employees to do what they are accountable for;
  • Establishes clear workplace policies and procedures;
  • Articulates a shared organizational vision;
  • Encourages knowledge sharing;
  • Supports risk-taking;
  • Clarifies BSR's theory of change and business model.

Employees of BSR:

  • Manage themselves and others to results;
  • Are accountable for their own performance and drive development through initiative and application of learning;
  • Take responsibility for knowing and implementing policies and procedures;
  • Own the vision -- take ownership for meeting organizational goals and building organizational capacity;
  • Teach and learn from each other -- proactively share information;
  • Embrace change and take risks;
  • Embrace BSR's interdependent business model;
  • Support the notion that responsible business practices can create a more just and sustainable society.
