At a time when conflict, instability, and geopolitical tensions are on the rise, companies are also facing increased regulatory requirements, media scrutiny, and investor expectations related to the prevention and management of human rights abuses in these contexts. Because the risk of human rights abuses is heightened in these contexts, so is the risk of business involvement in these abuses, potentially leading to reputational damage, operational interruptions, legal liability, and financial penalties. A growing number of companies are therefore grappling with questions of how to operate responsibly in conflict-affected and high-risk areas. While guidance on heightened human rights due diligence now exists, companies are still learning how to implement good practices effectively, efficiently, and systematically.
BSR is pleased to host a closed-door, invitation-only discussion exploring challenges and approaches to operating responsibly in conflict-affected and high-risk areas. Key questions to be explored include:
- What is the appropriate role of business in conflict-affected and high-risk areas, given both the importance of private sector investment to stability as well as the heightened potential for business involvement in human rights abuses?
- How can companies make principle-based decisions about responsible exit and responsible remaining? What are the key factors for consideration?
- How are companies balancing commercial, reputational, and human rights considerations when choosing to enter, remain in, or exit high-risk markets? Who are the different stakeholders inside companies who need to be engaged to inform decision-making?
- How are companies managing heightened human rights risks in conflict-affected and high-risk areas? What structures, processes, and tactics enable companies to manage these risks most effectively and efficiently?
- How can companies most effectively collaborate with peer companies and the diplomatic and aid community when operating in conflict-affected and high-risk areas?
Format: 1.5-hour moderated, roundtable discussion. Interested BSR members can reach out at hello@bsr.org to request an invitation.
