Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can reduce emissions 40-85 percent compared to diesel, but they make up less than 1 percent of vehicles in the U.S. today and technological hurdles may inhibit growth for a decade or more. Specialized applications such as in buses, handling equipment, and for renewable electricity storage may be the best options for hydrogen.
