Manager, Environmental Sustainability

The individual in this role will be responsible for developing and leading the execution of an environmental strategy for the company, with a primary focus on climate action in Cardinal Health’s operations and supply chain. This role is critical in building a decarbonization strategy and approved Science-Based Target for the organization to accelerate climate action, engage teams across the business, and drive progress against publicly stated goals.

This position works collaboratively across the organization and requires an experienced and detail-oriented sustainability leader who can function independently with diverse stakeholders and manage through influence across levels and functions. This position also requires an individual who has experience building strategies in a matrixed business environment and who operates with a consistent awareness of deadlines and results.

This position can be fully remote.

Responsibilities

Environmental Data Management and Reporting

  • Lead and continually improve the environmental data collection process and work cross-functionally to enhance processes, systems, documentation, and data completeness and accuracy.
  • Improve processes around energy and waste data that is auto-fed from third-party systems.
  • On an annual basis, manage the external assurance process over the company’s environmental data globally.
  • Manage the collection of data and lead the calculation of Scope 3 emissions on a regular basis.
  • Complete and maintain a Scope 2 market-based emissions inventory and restate baseline and other published data.
  • Complete and maintain a comprehensive Inventory Management Plan (IMP) for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
  • Prepare robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlining environmental data collection and validation processes, along with reporting boundaries, systems, stakeholders, emission factors, and calculation methodologies.
  • Provide quarterly environmental reporting to show trends and actively engage with sites to understand activities that are driving changes in resource consumption; and recommend opportunities to address issues.
  • Provide environmental data for all ESG reporting requirements, including the annual ESG Report, CDP, TCFD, and various ratings and rankings.
  • Track site-level energy, water and waste reduction projects in coordination with sites globally.

Strategy Development and Execution

  • Lead the development and execution of a decarbonization strategy for the company’s operations and supply chain in collaboration with colleagues from across the business.
  • Lead the coordination of a Science-Based Target (SBT) and manage the approval process with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
  • Assemble and lead a cross-functional decarbonization working group to identify and activate Scope 1, 2, and 3 reduction plans.
  • Identify and manage the implementation of site-level sustainability projects to drive environmental performance and operational efficiency, including energy, water and waste efficiency and renewable energy.
  • Support the preparation of internal and external communications to share the company’s goals, roadmaps and progress.
  • Lead quantitative climate risk assessments for the company and coordinate cross-functionally to embed findings across the business to manage identified risks.
  • Consistently monitor the quickly evolving regulatory environment, which includes the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) climate risk disclosure, along with customer, investor, NGO, and other market pressures, to advise the company on global best practices with respect to ESG disclosure and business integration. Monitor and analyze the strategies, policies and programs of other Fortune 500 companies, with particular attention to the healthcare industry.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communications

  • Provide input on Cardinal’s internal and external ESG communications strategy and advise on content creation and positioning.
  • Work effectively with the internal and external communications teams to advance the company’s reputation with respect to environmental sustainability.
  • Coordinate across Operations, Real Estate, Legal, Finance, Procurement, Transportation & Logistics, and others to build an actionable SBT roadmap and maintain coordination to drive progress against the goal.
  • Proactively engage and train relevant teams to improve buy-in and support of the company’s environmental sustainability work.
  • Create visually engaging communications for internal and external audiences, including dashboards, scorecards, infographics, PowerPoints, and reports, to demonstrate our environmental progress.
  • Support the Sales team in communicating environmental programs and progress to customers.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a thought leader with experience in and previous management responsibility for ESG issues and reporting in a corporate setting. A sophisticated understanding of the global ESG landscape and best practices is essential. Critical to success will be a broad proactive mindset, exceptional listening, framing and strategic abilities, and the ability to work successfully with large and complex organizations and with people of diverse functional and cultural backgrounds.

  • Progressive experience (5+ yrs) managing an ESG program, ESG strategies or related program or function.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, Master’s degree preferred, in sustainability or related topic.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing environmental data, reporting and strategy. Domestic and international experience preferred but not required.
  • Technical knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions accounting, decarbonization pathways, and evolving regulations.
  • Experience managing consistent and accurate data collection, developing data controls, and leveraging or building IT solutions as applicable.
  • Proven ability to analyze, interpret and translate large sets of data into simple insights or reports.
  • A sophisticated and deep understanding of today’s key global ESG issues and landscape, and the roles of the private, nonprofit and public sectors both in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate trends and issues in business and society that affect the company’s environmental and climate agenda and reputation.
  • Experience and comfort managing external consultants
