Why this job matters

The postholder will play a critical role in driving delivery across the three pillars of BT Group’s Responsible Tech and Human Rights strategy, which include:

  • Tech Governance: Embed BT’s responsible tech principles for consistent decision making, supported by enabling governance, culture and capacity building.
  • Growth and innovation: Leverage BT’s responsible approach to tech to differentiate existing products and propositions, and to lead in future growth areas.
  • Engagement and collaboration: Partner to build a responsible tech ecosystem that builds trust and drives growth.

This is a business-critical agenda, driven by expectations from consumers, customers, colleagues and investors, that goes to the core of BT Group’s future commercial growth, brand and reputation, and which cuts across all business units.

The Manager, Responsible Tech and Human Rights will be a stretching role for someone early in their business and human rights career who is excited by the opportunity to work at the intersect of tech and human rights. To be successful, you will have a campaigning mindset, resilient in the face of challenge, creative and tenacious in navigating roadblocks to get the desired outcome. You will need a combination of project management and organisational skills, excellent relationship management, communication and influencing abilities, and the ability to apply the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in the context of practical business decisions.

What you’ll be doing

Governance & reporting

  • Support the evolution of BT Group’s governance framework to meet upcoming and emerging regulatory requirements e.g. Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
  • Coordinate responsible tech and human rights reporting including the external modern slavery statement and internal risk reporting.
  • Support delivery of regular progress reports to the Corporate Affairs Director and on updates to the Responsible Business Committee and other senior leaders.
  • Carry out administrative and project management tasks for the team including scheduling meetings, minute-taking, and monitoring delivery against key actions.

Growth and Innovation

  • Ensure the responsible tech principles are applied in the context of key commercial propositions, with a focus on leveraging responsible tech to add value to the business and lead in new and future growth areas.
  • Work with BT Group’s customer-facing and technology units and other corporate functions including BT Sourced (our procurement business), to advise on Responsible Tech and Human Rights.Engagement

Engagement

  • Support group-wide capacity building to ensure colleagues are empowered to manage responsible tech and human rights risks through activities including training, creation of guidance and management of the intranet.
  • Engage with external stakeholders to inform BT Group’s approach internally and help develop BT Group’s external position and profile on responsible tech and human rights issues with external stakeholders – e.g. suppliers, customers, investors, civil society, government.

The skills you’ll need

  • 3-5 years’ business and human rights work experience.
  • Experience applying the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
  • An understanding of the human rights implications of technology across the value chain of develop, use, buy (sourcing) and sell
  • Ability to drive delivery at pace and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrable strategic thinking and leadership abilities.
  • Exemplary stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Ability to act as a spokesperson externally as well as internally, able to articulate a businesses’ viewpoint to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Able to operate effectively amid ambiguity and rapid change.
