Business Action for Climate Adaptation: Ensuring Co-Benefits for Communities

Since 2000, climate-related disasters have caused over US$3.6 trillion in global economic losses, with costs rising as extreme weather becomes more frequent and intense. Such climate impacts threaten business’ financial performance, continuity, and the communities that companies rely on, who face lost livelihoods, increased illness, disrupted essential services, and displacement. Among them, children and youth, women, and migrant workers bear the heaviest burden while being critical to business resilience through their current and future roles in the workforce, supply chains, and markets.

However, ongoing levels of adaptation finance and private sector action remain insufficient to protect long-term business value and operational resilience. To help companies respond to the converging challenges of climate change and community vulnerability, UNICEF and BSR have developed a suite of complementary tools that guide companies from understanding and committing to adaptation, to engaging effectively with policymakers, to collaborating with peers and partners to scale impact. They offer a clear pathway to accelerate investment in climate adaptation with co-benefits for communities, including children.

The tools are:

• The Imperative for Business Action on Climate Adaptation, Ensuring Co-Benefits for Communities: Understand how to make a compelling case for adaptation with co-benefits for communities, including children, within companies.
• 8 Key Elements to Accelerate Climate Adaptation with Co-Benefits for Communities: Discover core components of corporate adaptation plans that can help create shared value for business and communities.
• Strengthening Corporate Engagement with Policymakers on Community-Centered Adaptation: Learn how and why companies can engage with policymakers on Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans, and access 10 policy asks that companies can tailor to national and sectoral contexts.

Decarbonization Lever Library: Mapped Sectoral Transition Pathways

Unless the world acts now to curb emissions, climate change’s impacts, including heatwaves, flooding, and wildfires, will become even more intense, with severe risks to business.​

As business faces substantial compliance burden and costs to cut emissions, as well as calls from critical stakeholders for increased action to reach net zero, companies who do not take credible and legitimate action will increasingly be left behind as the effects of climate change accelerate. At the same time, new technologies and systems that will exist in a transitionary world will present opportunities for those businesses that take proactive action.

To help companies reduce emissions, understand the climate transition landscape, and achieve their climate goals, BSR is launching its Decarbonization Lever Library. Using this resource, companies will be able to pinpoint the origin of their emissions across Scopes 1-3, connect each source with the most effective decarbonization solutions, and identify practical steps to take now to capture future transition opportunities.

With data on cost ranges, abatement potential, and enabling conditions, companies can use the Library to design investment roadmaps that can deliver near-term emissions reductions while laying the foundation for deeper, longer-term decarbonization.

Stay the Course: Advancing Integrated Transition Plans

Climate Transition Plans (CTPs) are becoming increasingly essential in guiding companies from commitments to concrete action, as various climate disclosure standards converge and investor scrutiny of CTPs intensifies. While some companies face political headwinds and stakeholder backlash as they try to address climate change, many are advancing rapidly.

BSR’s new report builds on our earlier publication, Charting the Course: Navigating the Climate Transition Plan Landscape, providing an updated view of key developments in 2025:

• evolution of the CTP landscape;
• stakeholders' expectations;

As part of the Financial Services team, Anne Marie works with BSR member companies to advance sustainability management and impact investment initiatives. 

Prior to joining BSR, Anne Marie was a fellow at impact investment fund, Etho Capital, where she developed methodologies for emissions accounting and conducted ESG screenings. She also worked as an environmental engineering researcher at Stanford University, analyzing cost-emissions tradeoffs for water utilities.

Anne Marie holds a BS in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from EPFL and an MS in Environmental Engineering from ETH Zurich. She is fluent in English, Italian, and French.

As part of the Transformation team, Miyako supports BSR member companies on a wide range of sustainability topics across Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. 

With over 15 years of experience as a researcher and consultant, including more than a decade in sustainable investment, she brings deep expertise in ESG assessment and benchmarking, sustainable finance and investment, climate and nature risk analysis, board advisory, capacity building, and sustainability reporting. Before joining BSR, Miyako held key roles such as Global Sustainability Reporting Lead at Nikko Asset Management, Sustainability Manager at EY Singapore supporting financial institutions across APAC, and APAC Regional Lead for ESG Research & Client Engagement at FTSE Russell. 

Miyako holds a BA in Intercultural Communication from Ryukoku University, along with several sustainable finance-related certifications, including CFA ESG Investing and CISL Sustainable Finance.
