COVID-19 has exposed and accentuated imbalances in the global economy and prompted policy reflection on how to build a more inclusive and resilient future. Disruptions in global value chains (GVCs) in particular have fueled debates about their ability to deliver benefits for all and their potential role in both absorbing and transmitting or amplifying the impacts of economic shocks on people, the planet, and society. Rebuilding trust in the global markets will entail designing strategies to build more resilient and inclusive GVCs, to ensure the security of supply in essential goods, and to strengthen the capacity of businesses to better anticipate and manage shocks, while protecting workers and the environment. Responsible business conduct (RBC) is key to this agenda and can provide a common framework to support collaborative efforts to put people, the environment, and integrity at the center of the global economic system.

As part of the 9th OECD Global Forum on Responsible Business Conduct, this session will discuss how using a RBC lens can help address supply chain vulnerabilities and rebuild trust in the global economic system. Bringing together businesses, stakeholders, and policymakers, the session will explore RBC-based strategies and partnerships that can help ensure the security of essential goods and strengthen capacity to anticipate and manage shocks while protecting workers and the environment.
