What’s the role?

You will be responsible for the following:

External:

  • Building the company’s reputation as a leading multinational in human rights
  • As a respected subject matter expert, representing Shell at human rights-related global forums, conferences, and effectively across a diverse range of human rights issues
  • Providing expert technical advice and contributing to policy debates with key experts, influencers, and their institutions
  • Developing policy positions and effectively advocating for Shell’s interests with external stakeholders, i.e. international organisations, multilaterals, non-governmental organisations, and influencers (think tanks, academics, etc.)
  • Leveraging an extensive external network of individuals and institutions on a broad range of issues relating to human rights

Internal:

  • Contributing to the strategic advancing of the human rights strategy across the business and ensuring compliancy with existing and emerging country legislation
  • Proactively monitor human rights legislation globally and provide analysis and counsel to leadership on legislation compliance
  • As a trusted adviser to Shell’s senior leadership, advise on emerging issues and trends, risks and opportunities, to ensure legislation compliance and that Shell continues to manage human rights in line with our policies and principles
  • Using effective collaborative and influencing skills to secure strategic ambitions to deliver meaningful outcomes for Shell and society
  • Advancing our ESG ratings in human rights
  • Actively engaging, monitoring and shaping internal global and country-level policies
  • Providing appropriate counsel to the business regarding adherence to relevant internal and external policies, legislation and guidelines including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational companies
  • Participating in policy and leadership decision making bodies as required
  • Embracing change as the company advances its Powering Progress strategy

What We Need From You

Alongside your degree in human rights, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field, you’ll ideally have/be:

  • A trusted advisor by corporate senior leadership on human rights in a large multinational company
  • Proven track record of leading the implementation of a human rights strategy that is informed by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights across multiple functions (human resources, supply chain, worker welfare, in communities, provision of security, and other)
  • Building a multinational company’s external reputation as a leading company in human rights
  • Track record of delivering meaningful corporate human rights outcomes
  • Experience engaging and working in an inclusive and diverse company with a learner mindset and a collaborative approach to getting things done
  • Concrete experience in tackling issues in advance of them becoming risks to the business and its stakeholders

Competencies:

  • A respected subject matter expert in the field of human rights with an extensive network across MNCs, multilaterals, think tanks, and academics
  • Strong internal stakeholder management skills, working with both senior leadership and subject matter experts
  • In-depth knowledge of systemic and emerging human rights issues and legislation in different countries and in different parts of the business
  • Big picture strategic thinker, able to collaborate across teams while connecting the dots with business, supply chain, social impacts, security, etc.
  • Balanced and persuasive influencer of both internal and external stakeholders, building on solid data and experience in delivering outcomes for corporates and society
  • Thorough understanding of external policy and legal trends related to human rights across the business, and across key ESG metrics
  • Excellent grasp of societal and community expectations on the role of corporates and human rights
