Many Japanese companies are working hard to embed sustainability into their business practices. They are reacting to direct pressure from foreign investors, but the concept of sustainable growth achieved via improved corporate behavior is moving from the CSR departments through to investor relations, and from there to Japan’s CEOs and CFOs. They are being aided by initiatives such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which have created a common language around which investors and companies can discuss how to create value collaboratively.
