Pathways and Platforms for Greenhouse-Gas Reduction in U.S. Agriculture

BSR, in partnership with the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, is launching an initiative to assess how to use large corporate supply chains in the food, beverage, and agriculture sector as a "climate wedge" to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As part of this, we will identify key opportunities and outline areas of focus for corporate purchasing decisions, public incentives, and private investment.

The desired impact of the initiative is to inform development of a program that will target reductions of 100 MtCO2e/year (approximately 22 percent of 460 MtCO2e per year total from U.S. farms). We anticipate that key areas of focus will include livestock (230 MtCO2e), especially beef and dairy, and fertilizer practices for row crops (90 MtCO2e).

To launch the initiative, BSR will host an event in New York during Climate Week NYC with select companies, partners, and associations.
