In this brief, we describe the importance of addressing food losses at the agricultural production and post-harvest stages of the value chain and identify a range of solutions for companies to consider.
Based on studies by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, food lost from farm to fork amounts to about 1.3 billion metric tons per year, or roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption. Reducing these pre- and post-harvest losses is a win-win opportunity for society, the environment, and business, with potential savings in the millions of acres and billions of dollars.
