#Transport and Logistics

The efficient and reliable movement of goods and services is critical to global trade and to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Transport, however, has environmental and societal impacts that need to be managed: Freight transportation now accounts for 25 percent of the world’s transport energy use and is growing more rapidly than passenger transportation. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles are the biggest fuel consumers in Asia and account for the majority of air pollution and carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, freight costs comprise 14-24 percent of GDP in developing Asian countries, as compared to 7-8 percent in Europe and the United States. As a result, these countries are exposed to significant economic risks from fuel price fluctuations.

Green Freight Asia is an industry-led initiative with the key objective of lowering fuel consumption across freight movement in the Asia-Pacific region, reduce carbon dioxide emissions from this movement, and lower shipping costs across the entire supply chain.

We invite you, your colleagues responsible for global/Asia logistics procurement and supplier management, as well as your Asia-Pacific road-freight transport suppliers, to join an upcoming BSR Sustainability Matters webinar to learn about how participating in Green Freight Asia efforts can help you:

  • Make a conscious, environmentally friendly sourcing decision by selecting carriers based on green-freight credentials
  • Support carriers in making progress toward the adoption of green freight practices and energy-efficient technologies
  • Collaborate with Asia-Pacific-based stakeholders (e.g. governments, manufacturers, logistics companies, and peers), to advance sustainable supply chain practices.
