The Sustainability & Social Innovation team’s role is to work collaboratively with teams across Pearson to ensure our business practices and processes contribute to addressing the social, economic and environmental needs of society in a way that also creates business value.

Summary of Role

The Sustainability Manager manages the collection, tracking and reporting of social sustainability data for the company. He/she will coordinate across corporate departments to measure and communicate progress on global sustainability initiatives. He/she will be responsible for the annual Sustainability Report, working with the Sustainability Director to ensure a consistent and coherent approach to sustainability across the company.

Main activities / responsibilities

Project management

  • Work with the Sustainability Director to develop global Sustainability goals, metrics, and data systems that support delivery of our 2020 Sustainability Plan.
  • Lead preparation of the company’s annual Sustainability Report (GRI Report), including by: working across departments to prepare messaging and content, managing external consultants, coordinating appropriate internal and external promotional activities.
  • Assist with special projects such as: conducting issue-specific research; preparing analysis for meetings, presentations and conferences; building networks of internal sustainability champions.

Data management and analysis

  • Establish and maintain strong global systems for collecting, tracking and reporting sustainability data, coordinating across regions and departments to assess accuracy and completeness of data and to implement process improvements.
  • Regularly analyze Pearson’s sustainability performance and progress toward meeting corporate goals; recommend and drive improvements based on identified performance gaps, emerging requirements, market trends, and external benchmarking.
  • Provide sustainability performance updates to senior management on a regular basis.
  • Create and present compelling, evidence-based written and visual summaries of sustainability performance for both internal and external audiences, including executive dashboards, scorecards, slide decks, and reports

Communications

  • Work with the Sustainability Director to design and implement global stakeholder engagement initiatives related to sustainability.
  • Work collaboratively with relevant colleagues to develop materials promoting our 2020 Sustainability Plan and activities via the company intranet, website and other digital channels.
  • Manage response to requests for sustainability information, eg fielding general enquiries, preparing survey responses, and drafting award applications.
  • Represent Pearson at sustainability events and conferences.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in sustainability or a related field
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience, preferably managing, analyzing, and reporting on sustainability performance in a large company
  • Strong knowledge of current tools and trends in sustainability, and the methods with which sustainability can be integrated into business operations. Familiarity with data management platforms and GRI reporting preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, project management, and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to:
    • Write, edit and present compelling content
    • Perform quantitative tasks with speed and accuracy, including collection and management of data
    • Manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and proactively problem solve
  • Work across departments to achieve mutually beneficial results
  • Proficiency with MS office suite of products with strong Excel capabilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for driving sustainability achievements.
