Job Description

Morgan Stanleys Global Sustainable Finance (GSF) group is responsible for implementing the firms sustainability strategy across policies, activities, products and services. Positioned under the firms Chief Sustainability Officer, the team partners with senior leadership across the firm to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into core business. The Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing is housed within GSF and is dedicated to accelerating the adoption of sustainable investing, which seeks to deliver both competitive financial returns and positive environmental and social impact. The Institute partners across the firm to foster innovation, help develop the next generation of sustainable investing leaders and generate insights that inform and empower investors.

The Sustainability Reporting and Operations Associate (The Associate) will primarily support GSFs sustainability reporting, stakeholder and employee engagement and operational sustainability efforts. The Associate will be a sustainability subject matter generalist with a passion for corporate sustainability, excellent project management skills, strong attention to detail and nuance, and exceptional business writing, presentation and organizational skills. The Associate will develop and manage complex work plans and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to support the firms suite of ESG disclosures. The Associate with also partner closely with internal functions such as Corporate Services and Internal Communications to support operational sustainability initiatives and related communications, including the firms commitment to carbon neutrality, 10-point operational strategic plan and supply chain sustainability efforts. The role will also support other areas of the GSF team, utilizing a similar skillset.

Responsibilities:

  • Support firmwide sustainability reporting efforts, including interfacing with senior GSF leadership and the firm?s business units to: develop the outline, collect content, initiate drafting, improve reporting capabilities and procedures, collect and track sustainability data and project manage the annual sustainability reporting process,
  • Monitor ongoing and rapidly changing dynamics in the sustainability reporting space, with a specific focus on ESG reporting frameworks (i.e. SASB, GRI, TCFD, etc) and emerging regulatory ESG disclosure
  • Drive the process of the firms submissions to ESG/sustainability ratings/rankings, surveys, awards and firm-level responses to RFP questions on sustainability topics
  • Enhance internal employee engagement around the firms sustainability activities, with a particular focus on activities that support operational performance and telling the firms ESG story to employees
  • Coordinate employee-focused events covering key sustainability topics
  • Track emerging and developing sustainability practices to help keep the firms activities relevant and aligned with the external environment; topics to benchmark will include carbon offset procurement, sustainability reporting, and employee engagement, among others
  • Conduct research on emerging corporate sustainability topics, monitor emerging ESG issues on an ongoing basis, and identify relevant risks and opportunities
  • Support the integration of climate change considerations into Morgan Stanleys operations, and the development of strategies around the next generation of operational goal setting
  • Assist with development and quality assurance of communications, publications, and presentations
  • Engage, as necessary, with other areas of GSF including sustainable investing product development, climate change strategy execution and thought leadership activities
  • Work with cross-functional business units to achieve sustainability goals

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of work experience with 2+ years of corporate sustainability either in-house or in a consulting role; finance experience a plus
  • Solid understanding of the sustainability reporting landscape and the key frameworks (SASB in particular)
  • Experience in key relevant environmental, social and governance issues as it relates to corporate operations (i.e. energy management/efficiency, waste -reduction, green real estate), supply chain sustainability strategies and employee engagement
  • Detail-orientation with excellent business writing, communication and presentation skills
  • Comfort with balancing multiple priorities and effective multi-tasking, with ability to manage stakeholders and prioritize work with support from senior team members
  • Ability to operate collaboratively in a team culture
  • Demonstrated passion for sustainability and working with employees
  • Ability to build relationships and work with cross-functional partners to ensure alignment
  • Proven experience successfully delivering within a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Quantitative analytical skills a plus, specifically around sustainability, operational and ESG data
  • Experience with banks/financial institutions a plus
