Position Description:

The Director, Sustainability is responsible for developing, executing, managing and measuring key sustainability programs at the Company.

The ideal candidate will have worked in a multi-branded retail company and/or another industry with a high-profile consumer brand. The individual will be able to demonstrate experience with climate program management, reputation building, creativity and innovation in the sustainability area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the ELC Energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) / Climate programs.
  • Direct our efforts to achieve public GHG commitments e.g. Net Zero and RE 100, Science Based Target.
  • Coordinate energy data collection, validation and public reporting supporting our GHG commitments for Scopes 1-3 and insure they meet data assurance requirements consistent with our financial auditors.
  • Direct the research, planning and development of corporate and brand environmental programs, with a particular emphasis on energy and emissions, waste, water and packaging.
  • Collaborate with internal business leads, including senior leadership, and external stakeholder groups to achieve key sustainability goals; develop strong relationships and partnerships.
  • Maintain understanding of leading trends and changes in climate & energy, corporate social responsibility, brand purpose and overall sustainability landscape, including regulatory issues.
  • Serve as a contact and information source for sustainability initiatives focusing on energy, waste and water. Lead our Environmental Sustainability workstream, coordinating meetings, agenda and progress against goals and objectives.
  • Work closely with internal and external resources to develop creative and integrated sustainability programs, including our presence at key conferences like ClimateWeek NYC and COP.
  • Establish and ensure adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans and performance requirements. Manage metrics and reporting on performance for management reports and inclusion in our annual sustainability report.
  • Write and edit materials promoting our sustainability program and activities via the company intranet, corporate website, sustainability report and our digital channels.
  • Enable our brands to make consumer facing claims in the climate and energy space.
  • Lead a team of Managers, interns and fellows

Candidate Profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, management, sustainability required; masters’ degree preferred
  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience from a top-tier consulting firm, NGO working with business, or a CSR/sustainability, corporate affairs, or similar role in the private sector
  • Prior supervisory experience leading a team
  • Deep knowledge of the social and environmental issues and NGO landscape
  • Experience on managing Climate & Energy programs at a large manufacturing company, Science Based Target and Net Zero goals management is a plus
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including but not limited to: employees, consumers, communities, government officials and other individuals/entities of influence
  • Outstanding writing and presentation development skills
  • Confidence to counsel company leaders on sustainability initiatives and strategy
  • Exceptional organizational skills; ability to manage several projects at once, even while away from the office
  • Experience communicating and marketing sustainability efforts
  • Experience with GRI reporting on sustainability efforts, including an understanding of CDP, carbon and water reporting
