DataBank is seeking a Director of Sustainability to help lead, define, and implement strategies to support our environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives. Reducing the carbon footprint of our data centers along with the overall reduction in the use of limited natural resources including power, water, building material, etc. is essential to the role and a core part of DataBank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The Director of Sustainability will work with a cross-functional team to develop and report sustainability KPIs and use them to drive incremental improvement to these metrics. The Direct of Sustainability will partner with the Innovation Engineering team to ensure design guidelines and standards for new and existing data centers incorporate green elements, conserve resources, leverage higher percentages of renewable power and push closer to carbon neutrality.

Responsibilities

  • Manage DataBank’s global sustainability initiative with a focus on defining the strategic vision, measurement, implementation and continuous improvement
  • Lead the creation and implementation of DataBank’s CSR initiatives including establishing short, mid and long-term strategic initiatives focused on sustainability
  • Define carbon footprint globally for DataBank and partner cross functionally to impact positive reductions on-site and upstream with public and private sector power providers
  • Enable customers to achieve their sustainability goals by making it easier for them to participate in sustainable programs across DataBank’s colocations
  • Research and implement pilot programs, partnering with Sales on renewable energy offerings from power providers that customers can use to achieve their sustainability goals in existing and future markets
  • Find ways to balance corporate financial and sustainability goals to maintain or increase overall profitability and progressing and achieving both short, mid and long-term sustainability targets
  • Define and develop carbon offset program
  • Collaborate with global engineering team to define sustainability requirements to ensure standards capture core objectives that will be implemented into all new projects across DataBank’s portfolio
  • Be DataBank’s evangelist and core spokesperson for sustainability. Partner with marketing to define the narrative, to promote the company’s commitment and progress towards our sustainability goals, and communicate how DataBank can enable our customers achieve their sustainability goals
  • Develop processes, standards and tools to enable Development & Engineering, Construction and Operations teams to successfully implement strategic initiatives in line with construction project targets
  • Bring forward industry best practices to extend sustainability beyond DataBank’s operational data centers to include sustainable construction practices and building methods
  • Push forward strategies to reduce carbon footprint, energy usage, pollutants such as Greenhouse Gases and increase recycling, education and awareness
  • Define and roll out corporate policies on sustainability partnering with Chief Administrative Officer’s department
  • Identify opportunities to positively impact sustainability within DataBank’s corporate offices
  • Lead outreach initiatives to local municipalities, utilities and sustainability coalitions (i.e., the Data Center Coalition) to bring DataBank to the table as a partner and active participant in the marketplace
  • Create and publish internal and external presentations and reports for stakeholder, executive and customer consumption

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science or Arts in Environmental Studies or equivalent experience required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to partner cross functionally to solve complex challenges
  • Travel required is expected to be 10%, but may increase over time as the business evolves

Preferred

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 7 years of experience managing corporate sustainability programs preferred
  • 5+ years of Data Center experience is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Certification in ISSP-SEP (Sustainability Excellence Professional), ISSP-CSP (Certified Sustainability Professional) or equivalent is strongly preferred, but not required
  • LEED accredited professional preferred
