Job Description

Organization and Governance

The Group Sustainability team is led by an Executive Vice President who reports directly to the CEO. Progress on Sustainability is tracked via a TBL Scorecard which forms the basis of periodic reporting to the Group Leadership Team, Board of Directors and its Sustainability & Ethics Committee.

The Group Sustainability team ensures that Stora Enso takes due account of the opportunities and challenges presented to it by the constantly changing expectations of society regarding social and environmental responsibility, for example the Sustainable Development Goals. Its mission is to ensure that over the long-term Stora Enso can reward its shareholders but not at the expense of other stakeholders.

The Group Sustainability team ensures that the key elements of the governance model are coherent and effective. This model includes the Sustainability Council, Sustainability Forum and Sustainability Community. All policies, guidelines and instructions are managed within the model and working groups oversee specific subject areas.

The role reports to the Executive Vice President for Sustainability. It is a senior position within the company management structure. The role sits within the Group Sustainability team.

The position holder is responsible for leading the company-wide approach to Human Rights including policies and practices. He/she inherits a recently updated Human Rights policy, a set of eight highest priority Human Rights and a new compliance process. He/she will work closely with our five divisions and functions to ensure a coherent approach to Human Rights that keeps Stora Enso at the forefront of topic. He/she will anchor key decisions and actions through the governance model.

Areas of responsibility

Main responsibilities of the position holder

  • Ensuring our Human Rights compliance, due diligence and remedy processes are effective and consistent with international best practice
  • Building the capacity of colleagues to understand and manage Human Rights so that our divisions and functions embed respect for it even more in their policies, processes and procedures
  • Ensuring our Human Rights policy, guidelines and other steering documents remain up with best practice
  • Managing and setting priorities with the internal Stora Enso Human Rights working group

Other responsibilities of the position holder

  • Providing timely, accurate and complete information for reporting and communication purposes
  • Representing the company in relevant external networks, meetings and events
  • Any other aspect of Human Rights required to keep Stora Enso at the forefront of the topic

Qualifications

Key Requirements

  • Relevant university qualification or equivalent e.g. specialist training in Human Rights programme implementation, Human Rights aspects of law or public policy or other related fields of study
  • Minimum seven years of experience implementing Human Rights policies and practices in a large international business with natural resources or agriculture operations; subject matter expert or as a leader in the social aspects of sustainability or as a leader in responsible sourcing
  • Experience of practical implementation challenges in emerging markets
  • Proven ability to deliver in a large international business operating a matrix management model

Other Requirements

  • Proven experience of stakeholder management
  • Fluent in spoken English and high quality written English
  • Self-sufficient with respect to core MS Office tools and other digital tools typically used in business
  • The role necessitates regular international travel
