Rio Tinto is seeking a Communities and Social Performance (CSP) Coordinator to supervise the CSP activities related to its exploration work in Kazakhstan with focus on Karaganda oblast activities. Our relationships with the stakeholders including local communities which are extremely important and developing strong healthy relationships with them depends on providing accurate, comprehensible information, that neither over nor understates project impacts and benefits, managing expectations, using excellent communication skills with communities as well as listening carefully, and tactfully probing issues of importance. Also key is the effective communication, timely and accurate reporting in both oral and written formats to immediate supervisors so that appropriate actions can be planned.

The role is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan but the incumbent will travel frequently to the project site and to various local surrounding communities.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity to support a multi-disciplinary team and provide support to CSP primarily to our copper exploration project in Karaganda, Kazakhstan and to other regional projects. Reporting to Head of Commercial and Subsoil Use Department, you will:

  • Support building positive relationships with regional and district stakeholders and local communities, and implementation of Rio Tinto’s CSP standards
  • Strategic planning for CSP activities including responsibility for stakeholder engagement strategy, communication plan and its track record
  • Facilitate and support community and stakeholder meetings, representing Rio Tinto
  • Support local business procurement and employment initiatives
  • Identify potential training opportunities and facilitate training development opportunities for local communities
  • Contribute to the project study, researching socio-economic information about the region, heritage sites, and other related issues
  • Support and implement recommendations related to company commitments with local communities

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • University degree, preferably in politics, economic and social science, mediation or psychology
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience in communities and social performance, including diverse and complex cultural and community challenges
  • Previous experience in resource projects, with experience of exploration projects preferred
  • Practical problem solving skills in researching and resolving community issues as they relate to workforce and training development
  • Sound communication skills including the ability to write recommendations and reports for management and public speaking skills to present information on opportunities which will benefit the project and local communities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with field managers to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise, skills and technical capability
  • Strong skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Fluent in Russian, English and Kazakh languages, both business written and verbal ones
  • Ability to travel to remote project locations within Kazakhstan with a short notice
