Marshall Chase, Associate Director, Advisory Services
Last week, the U.S. State Department announced the creation of a Public-Private Alliance (PPA) for Responsible Minerals Trade, with a goal of working with companies, civil society, and governments to support conflict-free mineral supply chain efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This is a significant step to overcome what has become a de facto embargo on trade in tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold from the country and surrounding region, and to support mining and trade that contributes to the local economy without funding armed conflict in the eastern DRC. Here I offer what I believe to be the three most significant developments that I’ve had the privilege to witness, and the corresponding areas where significant improvement is required. Read more →

Conflict Minerals Regulations and Round Two of Multi-Stakeholder Responses
Marshall Chase, Associate Director, Advisory Services
In advance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) deadline for comments on proposed conflict minerals reporting rules, a multi-stakeholder group facilitated by the Responsible Sourcing Network has developed a set of comments on the SEC's draft regulations. The comments encourage greater clarity and specificity in certain parts of the regulations, and more importantly, highlight the need to support the continued sourcing of verifiably conflict-free minerals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and surrounding region.
