CSR & Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia—the largest economy in the Middle East—has aspirations to be one of the 10 most competitive economies in the world.
Its natural resource wealth and large youth population provide a huge opportunity for development. Through this initiative, BSR works with Saudi Arabia-based companies to help realize their goal by improving their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.
Over the past year, BSR has established close working relationships with Jeddah-based business, civil society partners, and human rights organizations to develop and deliver company workshops and improve corporate responsibility. In particular, BSR has been helping companies explore the role of Saudi business in protecting migrant labor and human rights.
Our Approach
- Education through Research Conduct action-based research through interaction with business and civil society partners. Current partners include the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ECO Consulting, and the National Society of Human Rights.
- Actionable Insight through Workshop: Deliver CSR training programs to raise private-sector awareness of ESG issues, including human rights and migrant labor issues, throughout the country.
- Capacity-Building through Engagement: Work with Saudi-based companies to build executive and manager-level capacity in and knowledge of CSR, including strategy, reporting and communication, environmental management, and human rights.
- Linking with Other Initiatives: Build on BSR’s Migration Linkages initiative by applying lessons learned and best practices to improve the situation of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia.
