World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Program Communications Sr. Specialist to help develop and execute communication strategies that support WWF’s Markets Program. The primary goal of the program is to work with companies to improve the production of the commodities with the most significant impact on the places and species WWF seeks to protect. The work of this position helps drive the overall success of WWF’s Markets Program, which works to ensure our commodity footprint is in step with a living planet. This person reports to the Program Communications Team’s Deputy Director for Markets and is based in Washington, DC.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. In cooperation with program staff at WWF-US and throughout the WWF Network, develops the foundation for communications strategies to guide the roll-out of relevant communications tactics. The strategies may include communications goals, audiences, messengers, key messages and challenges/ opportunities associated with reaching each goal. In collaboration with manager, makes all final decisions related to this component of each communications strategy.
  2. In cooperation with the Marketing & Communications Division’s teams, develops the tactics and work plan sections of each communications strategy which he/she is responsible for completing. Encourages – and relies on – the expertise of each team within the Division when developing these sections.
  3. Communicates final strategies to those responsible for implementing tactics within the strategies, so as to achieve a successful launch through multiple communications channels. Ensures that they are aware of the tactics for which they are responsible, as well as funding and timelines associated with each tactic.
  4. Oversees the execution of each communications strategy for which he/she is responsible.
  5. Implements tactics that are the responsibility of the Program Communications team (e.g., videos, newsletters, brochures, web stories and infographics). Encourages – and relies on – the expertise of others in the Marketing & Communications Division to successfully execute all other tactics within the strategies (e.g., media).
  6. Establishes expertise in program areas supported to provide guidance on how to reach communications goals related to the program.
  7. Anticipates communication conflicts, as well as risk to our reputation and brand, through our work with WWF program teams and engagement with external stakeholders. Mitigates these risks by coordinating with key audiences, providing a proven step-wise approach to problem solving.
  8. Provides quarterly updates on progress being made in reaching each communications goal within the strategies for which she/his is responsible.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Relationships:

  1. Internal: Interacts frequently with key program staff, field programs and the entire Marketing & Communications Division to advise, develop and execute program communications strategies.
  2. External: Interacts with agencies and research organizations, partner organizations and consultants as necessary. Maintains regular contact with representatives from colleague organizations, WWF International, WWF national organizations and professional networks.

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Experience:
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required.
  • A business degree is preferred.
  • Position requires at least 6-8 years of program or other professional experience, preferably with an agency or corporation that specializes in business-related communications and/or marketing.
  • Must demonstrate success in conceptualizing, developing, implementing and managing communications strategies that support an entity’s goals.
  • Experience with mission-oriented, strategic communications or brand marketing, and success as a creative and effective communicator is essential.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Creative and strategic thinker.
  • Strong understanding of business fundamentals and knowledge of the corporate sustainability space.
  • Tech savvy, with experience in producing communications materials for a variety of channels, including digital and multimedia.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) that can be used internally and externally to, among other things, explain the value of strategic communications and address issues and concerns related to the process of developing and executing communications strategies.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven ability to persuade others towards an idea or goal.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable.
  • Commitment to mission, goals and values of WWF.
  • Able to manage conflicts.
