The Fair Labor Association (FLA) combines the efforts of industry, civil society organizations, and colleges and universities to protect workers’ rights and improve working conditions worldwide by promoting adherence to international labor standards. SUMMARY:

The Project Director will be responsible for all activities conducted in connection with coordination, documentation, representation, training and capacity building and assessments of an externally-funded project on sugarcane supply chain in Mexico. Other services may be requested based on project or department needs.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Conduct agriculture research (country profile, task and risk mapping, local organizations etc.) in Mexico related to the project
  • Identify credible local service providers and experts to deliver various components of the project in a timely manner
  • Manage all paperwork in relation to contracting of the service providers in cooperation with the FLA finance and HR departments
  • Network with local and international organizations on a regular basis and hold stakeholder consultation as required by the project
  • Provide support in reviewing, developing, and updating training material for the project; conduct train-the-trainer workshops
  • Conduct periodic training of monitors, service providers and other stakeholders, as required by the project
  • Attend meetings and field visits related to the project; write meeting minutes and field visit summaries
  • Represent the FLA at meetings and events related to the project, including meetings with donors and company partners
  • Manage day-to-day operational aspects of the project, identifying bottlenecks and resolving or escalating them in a timely fashion
  • Provide translation support in both written and oral forms when necessary
  • Coordinate, communicate, and interact with FLA staff on a regular basis regarding the project
  • Ensure proper documentation and timely submission of periodic reports, accounts and documents to donor and FLA Headquarters (in line with grant requirements)
  • Other duties as assigned related to the project or agriculture department

KEY SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to network within the rural / grass root level civil society community, local government and International Organizations operating in Mexico (with a focus on the sugarcane industry)
  • Excellent conceptualization, analytical, organizational, hands-on implementation and presentation skills
  • Excellent Spanish and English speaking and writing skills
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams in different socio-cultural environments
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 7-10 years experience in agricultural supply chain analysis and mapping, identification and remediation of labor issues in agricultural production, root cause analysis of child labor and forced labor, and collaboration with local stakeholders to remediate labor issues, labor standards in the agriculture sector, code of conduct implementation
  • Knowledge of local and international agricultural labor and monitoring movements and of multi-stakeholder initiatives
  • Excellent report reviewing and report writing skills
  • Experience in conducting training-of-trainer and field level training and facilitation activities
  • Experience in holding stakeholder consultations and networking with NGOs and CSOs

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Heavy computer usage; requires bending, reaching and lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Extensive travel is required for this position
  • The Project Manager will be based in Mexico, preferably in the vicinity of the area where the project is being implemented
