The Fair Winds Charter: How Shipping Companies Collaborated For Cleaner Air in Hong Kong

Hosts

  • Laura Ediger, Associate Director, Advisory Services, BSR
  • Guests

    • Veronica Booth, Senior Project Manager, Civic Exchange, Hong Kong

    Description

In 2010, 17 shipping companies signed the Fair Winds Charter and committed to switching to cleaner fuel when berthing in the Hong Kong harbor. According to Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department, there has been a significant drop in at-berth sulphur dioxide emissions and particulate matter for the past three years, resulting in cleaner air in the area surrounding one of the world's largest ports.

Laura Ediger, Associate Director at BSR, talks to Veronica Booth, Senior Project Manager at Civic Exchange, an independent public-policy think tank that leads the Charter, about the impact this voluntary, industry-led collaboration has had on air quality in Hong Kong, and how the Charter is creating new paths for emissions-control regulation across the Pearl River Delta.
