Taking the Lead on Creating Sustainable Consumption Patterns
More than 1,000 leaders from business, civil society, and government will gather today at the BSR Conference 2010 in New York to gain the insights and connections they need to integrate sustainability into strategy and core business—a necessity for success in today's fast-changing world. This year's theme, "Innovate. Integrate. Inspire.," reflects the opportunities for companies to embrace innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change, widespread poverty, obesity, environmental degradation, sustainable consumption, and more.
In this week's feature article, BSR's Linda Hwang looks in depth at sustainable consumption. Our world’s consumption patterns currently outpace the planet's ability to regenerate resources by 30 percent, so companies that figure out how to deliver value with radically reduced material inputs will be well positioned for success. Hwang explores how going back to marketing basics, and focusing on brand loyalty and people's needs, can help companies steer consumers toward more sustainable choices—a key to creating widespread changes to consumption patterns.
Next, we highlight a key finding of the new BSR/GlobeScan "State of Sustainable Business Poll 2010:" workers' rights, human rights, climate change, and water availability/quality top the list of BSR members' sustainability priorities for 2011.
Finally, to help you get the most out of the BSR Conference 2010—whether you'll be there or not—we offer an insider's guide to the event. It covers how attendees can customize their agendas, join the Conference social networking site to connect with peers, and how to access the videos, session summaries, Twitter feed, and more coming out of the event.

'Workers' Rights' Tops List of Priorities in Year Ahead
By
According to one key finding from a new survey of nearly 400 BSR members (see chart below), workers' rights has jumped to the top of the list of significant priorities for companies' CSR/sustainability efforts in the year ahead, followed by human rights, climate change, and water quality/availability. Climate change dropped two spots from last year, when it was at the top of the list and workers' rights was third.
Look for complete results from the BSR/GlobeScan "State of Sustainable Business Poll 2010" on our website tomorrow (November 3). The results offer guidance on: the actions that companies can take to improve public trust in business, demonstrate leadership, and drive business success; whether budgets for CSR/sustainability programs will increase or decrease; the most significant developments expected in the field next year; and more.
