Improving Worker Well-Being
In our work on labor issues over the past 20 years, BSR has launched initiatives such as Beyond Monitoring and HERproject to get companies to look beyond compliance at ways to improve the lives, health, and communities of workers.
Last week, Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) publicly announced its new approach to supply chain management–developed with BSR’s support–which shifts from a “do no harm” focus to an emphasis on worker well-being.
In this week’s feature article, we explain how LS&Co. plans to do this. As LS&Co.’s Chief Supply Chain Officer David Love explained: “We believe a focus on worker well-being will not only benefit individual workers and their families, but strengthen the factories in which they work, improving efficiency, productivity, and ultimately business’ bottom line.”
We also share details about a new organization whose purpose is to support responsible practices throughout the coal supply chain. And we want to hear from you: Answer our survey to help BSR’s CiYuan initiative shape the future of China’s nonprofit sector.

Bettercoal Launches to Advance CSR in the Coal Supply Chain
By Angie Farrag, Associate Director, Transport and Logistics, BSR
Bettercoal, a global, not-for-profit initiative supporting the continuous improvement of corporate responsibility in the international coal supply chain, launched last week. DONG Energy, EDF, Enel, E.ON, GDF Suez, RWE, and Vattenfall established the initiative to promote on-the-ground changes around coal mines for the benefit of workers, communities, businesses, and the environment. Eventually, Bettercoal will look beyond the mine level to support responsible practices throughout the coal supply chain. Nordic energy company Fortum recently became the first new member, and membership is open to all major users of coal worldwide. Since January 2011, BSR has actively supported the founding members as a lead facilitator and expert on a range of issues, including the ethical, social, and environmental risks and impacts of mining. BSR believes that Bettercoal has the potential to make a real and meaningful impact on an industry that is set to grow significantly in the next 50 years.

Survey: Help Shape China’s Nonprofit Sector
By Cammie Erickson, Manager, Global Partnership Development, BSR
How would you revamp the nonprofit sector in the United States if you could build it from the ground up? What would you do differently? What would you keep the same? BSR's CiYuan initiative would like your input for a survey that will help us shape China's nonprofit sector. At the end of May, BSR's CiYuan will convene several nonprofit leaders in New York to debate what works--and what doesn't--in the U.S. nonprofit sector. We will use ideas from that discussion and this survey to inform CiYuan's work to strengthen civil society and cross-sector partnerships in China. Share your ideas through our survey. For additional context, read Taproot Foundation President and Founder Aaron Hurst's HuffingtonPost.com blog.
