A Tale of Two Energy Trends (and What They Mean for the Climate)
In terms of percentage of growth, renewable energy is the fastest-growing energy sector. At the same time, coal is the fastest-growing energy source globally.
What does it mean when the top growth areas for the economy include both “low-carbon” and “carbon-intense” energy?
This week, BSR’s Climate and Energy Manager Ryan Schuchard makes sense of these countervailing trends and offers seven ideas for company managers to keep in mind as they think of their own company’s role in climate change.
We also offer highlights from our latest report for CTIA–The Wireless Association on the socioeconomic impacts of wireless technology. And we share details on BSR and Hilton Worldwide’s new Center for Sustainable Procurement, which is aimed at helping procurement managers integrate sustainability into purchasing decisions.

How Wireless Technology Can Support Social Impact
By Marshall Chase, Associate Director, Advisory Services, BSR
A new report by BSR and CTIA--the Wireless Association explores opportunities to use wireless services to support health care, financial inclusion, education, and community empowerment. Some of these opportunities include: * Mobile health: Health care workers can reach underserved areas by coordinating medical services, predicting disease outbreaks, and connecting patients to doctors. * Mobile finance: Mobile applications improve access to financial services for many of the 60 million unbanked and under-banked people in the United States and to billions more who live around the world. * Mobile education: Wireless applications encourage "anytime, anywhere" interactive learning. * Community empowerment: Wireless services can increase people's ability to connect with each other, their governments, and other institutions in effective ways. The report also explores the industry's challenges, including ensuring ethical supply chain labor, addressing concerns about privacy and freedom of expression, and providing consumer education about the opportunities and risks of using wireless services.

BSR, Hilton Launch Center to Help Companies Integrate Sustainability Into Procurement Decisions
By Celine Suarez, Manager, Advisory Services, BSR
As more sustainability data has become available in recent years, many companies are struggling with how to apply this information to the products they purchase. Today, BSR and Hilton Worldwide launched the Center for Sustainable Procurement (CSP) to help global business procurement managers integrate sustainability data into their purchasing decisions. Funded by Hilton Worldwide and managed by BSR, the CSP will develop:
-
Research, case studies, and surveys on topics such as incentives for category managers
-
Metrics analyses that focus on integrating data into existing company approaches
-
Guidelines, webinars, and web content for companies' educational use internally
-
One-on-one and collaborative consulting projects for a small group of BSR members
BSR will share the information developed through this work with the public and with members through the BSR Insight, Sustainability Matters webinars, and research reports. For more information about the Center for Sustainable Procurement, contact Celine Suarez.
