BSR Insight | Electronics Companies Seek Cross-Industry Collaboration for the Responsible Sourcing of Metals
Because of the ongoing civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also a source of metals such as tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold that are used in electronics products, electronics companies are being asked more frequently to identify the origins of their materials.
However, tracing the origins of these metals—which are also used in the aerospace, automotive, and jewelry industries—can be complicated because the smelting and refining processes often combine minerals from multiple sources.
To help all sectors facing this challenge, BSR will facilitate a multi-industry forum at the BSR Conference 2009 in San Francisco on October 20, to discuss the potential of tracing the origin of metals and supporting systemic change through the identification of socially and environmentally responsible sources. The forum is being led by Dell, HP, Intel, and Motorola.
