The Future of Fuels: Michael Levi on the Politics of Energy
Ryan Schuchard, Manager, Climate and Energy, BSR
In a discussion at the World Affairs Council yesterday, Michael Levi—whose forthcoming book Power Surge (May 2013) will examine America’s two unfolding energy revolutions—emphasized that we need to encourage renewable, low-carbon energy sources, while managing the impacts of shale and other unconventional oil and gas production that are likely to be with us for many decades to come.
“Unless we can find a way to deal with U.S. emissions while still taking advantage of what’s happening in North American oil and gas, we’re not going to get the political support that’s necessary to move forward. From where I sit, combining opportunities for expanded supply with constraints on our consumption is the way to do that.”
- Michael Levi, World Affairs Council, January 15, 2013
The first report in BSR’s Future of Fuels initiative takes a deeper look at what is known (and what is not) about the sustainability impacts of transportation fuel. Later this year, we’ll publish a second report on what can and should be done about those impacts and hold a few events to consider new opportunities for collaboration. More information about Future of Fuels is available here.
